Software

For this project, we will require some projection mapping software. I asked a friend for some advice about what was the best to use and experiement with. He is the owner of Boxcat and works at Comix, providing visuals for artists. The first i knew about was VVVV which was taugh last year in the same class. We werent taught how to use it for projection mapping but im sure i would be able to find tutorials in order to do it. The next, i was told about by my friend. This software is HeavyM. It is free software that is very popular to use and is also fairly simple. Again, this is something i would have to look for tutorials for. Another is a recent release but does require purchase. Notch has a simalar interface to VVVV in which it uses nodes to create the visuals. Because of the purchase price, i will be unable to use it for the project but i will still look into how it is used. The final one is Touch Designer. Again, this is a node based program that allows you to create visual

Our idea was to projection map onto a blank car model. The user would then be able to customise parts of the car to create their own custom vehicle. This would require some interactivity through a tablet or physical movement. Below is an example i found of projection mapping with kinect. The creator is able to change colours of various parts of the model and change what he is doing via a touch menu. This would be extremely useful for us as this is applicable to our idea. Dimitri Ghys, 2013 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnfIk1zIlao This example uses kinect to play with the projection, allowing the user to alter its shape and play with a physics engine. Michael Korostelev, 2011 What we wish to achieve is very possible. It will just require a lot of different components to work. This makes the project very interesting for us to do since it will require a lot more team work to compile everything.

Initial Idea

These are the notes from the first class with my group. We had decided on working on some projection mapping since it had been spoken about in the course, but we were yet to have the opportunity to do it. For our next meeting, we wanted to have contacted some people with regards to sorting out a model to project onto. We would also talk to people in the industry for some advice about the project. In the mean time, i will be looking for the best software to use for projection mapping and looking for some tutorials. Since, we would like to make it interactive, ill be looking at ways to use kinect to add the interactivity. If we are unable to do this, we decided a tablet with the ability to customise the car would be a good option.
